The Topsides of International Large FLNG Commenced in Daishan

Daishan county is consolidating the foundation of manufacturing, and building a new system of marine industry to devote for manufacturing power. This morning, the topsides of Congo Marine XII floating liquefied natural gas project commenced at Zhoushan Yard of Wison Offshore & Marine located in Xiushan, Daishan, Zhejiang. By report, this is the first time that a Chinese company acts the role of EPC contractor in a large-scale FLNG (floating liquefied natural gas) project, breaking the monopoly of European and South Korean companies.

The topsides will be used in the FLNG ordered by Eni, an Italian oil and gas giant. The facility will be deployed at a large gas field in Marine XII of the Republic of Congo, about 50 kilometers offshore, with a water depth of 30 meters to 50 meters. At full capacity, it can deal about 10.76 million cubic meters of gas per day from nearby fields for production, storage and export, with an annual LNG (liquefied natural gas) capacity of 2.4 million tons, ranking fourth in the global FLNG annual capacity ranking.

"It's a milestone for Wison. In 2017, we delivered a small scale FLNG with an annual capacity of 600,000 tons. And this time the capacity increased to 2.4 million tons. It’s obviously different in international standard requirements and customer recognition." Said Wei Huaqing, vice president of Wison Offshore & Marine.

FLNG is a powerful tool for the development of offshore natural gas resources, which can directly liquefy and store the extracted natural gas in the sea far from the land. It is the most complex, highest cost and highest added value product in the offshore natural gas equipment, and can be called the "new pearl in the crown" of the marine industry.

Compared with traditional onshore LNG plants, FLNG has the characteristics of high equipment integration, short construction period, less investment, more flexible development, controllable risks, and earlier revenue realization. "We put a lot of effort into this project, R&D, standardized design, and cooperation with many major international companies, just for this project." Said Wei Huaqing.

In the past two years, with the change of the international natural gas supply and demand structure, some countries have increasing demand for energy security. And many oil and gas companies around the world will gradually become a trend to use FLNG to develop offshore natural gas resources. There are currently only five FLNGs in operation worldwide (in which a small FLNG with an annual capacity of 600,000 tons was delivered by Wison in 2017).

"The international customer recognition of Wison Offshore & Marine is gradually increasing, understanding Wison's technology, project execution capabilities, and ability to provide integrated solutions. They also recognized “Made in China” of EPC (integrated solution) from engineering to delivery by a contractor." Said Wei Huaqing.

Nowadays, Daishan has built a completed system of ship and offshore equipment manufacture and supply chain, with R&D, engineering, construction, supporting, and service.
